Premier Sports Management Assists Hospital with Major League All-Star Week Agreement

June 14, 2012

OVERLAND PARK, KS (June 14, 2012) – Sports marketing firm Premier Sports Management assisted The University of Kansas Hospital in negotiations with Major League Baseball to become “The Official Healthcare Provider of the 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Week.” The announcement was made in front of more than 200 of the hospital’s senior leadership staff.

Through the partnership, The University of Kansas Hospital will provide medical services for the 2012 All-Star Game and all other events at Kauffman Stadium in addition to virtually every official MLB event in Kansas City during All-Star Week.

Mitch Wheeler, vice president of business development for Premier Sports, said the opportunity to advance the hospital’s reputation as a leading sports medicine healthcare provider was the impetus for approaching Major League Baseball about the partnership. Wheeler and his team negotiated a sponsorship and activation plan on behalf of the hospital, similar to what Premier did in recent negotiations between the hospital and the Kansas City Royals. The University of Kansas Hospital has been the Official Healthcare Provider of the Kansas City Royals since 2011, providing team doctors, healthcare and fan first-aid at Kauffman Stadium.

“We saw an opportunity to extend the hospital’s reach through this agreement and further cement its reputation as a healthcare leader and sports medicine specialist in the region,” Wheeler said. “The partnership is a natural extension of what is already occurring at the stadium on a daily basis with regard to quality healthcare.”

Bob Page, president and chief executive officer of The University of Kansas Hospital, said he was on the phone to Major League Baseball Properties shortly after it was officially confirmed the Midsummer Classic would be in Kansas City, and Major League Baseball executives were eager to guarantee top-notch care for the more than 200,000 fans expected to take part in events throughout the week.

“The University of Kansas Hospital will provide our fans the best care available if they need medical assistance at any of our All-Star events,” said Lou Koskovolis, Senior Vice President, Corporate Sales & Marketing, Major League Baseball. “We are thrilled to have this level of comprehensive healthcare experts on our team.”

In addition to the marquee event – the 2012 MLB All-Star Game – the Kauffman Stadium events being covered by The University of Kansas Hospital include the Home Run Derby, Celebrity Softball Game, Futures Game and All-Star team practices.  The hospital will be providing the medical staff for the teams on the field and will also oversee healthcare for fans at The K, including the First Aid Stations and any fan-related health issues in the Truman Sports Complex parking lots.

As All-Star Week activities extend throughout the metropolitan area, The University of Kansas Hospital will be on-site at each location. Healthcare teams will be at all five days of the MLB All-Star FanFest at the Kansas City Convention Center from July 6-10. The medical staff will participate in 30-minute “Fitness Clinics” each day in addition to being available to address any healthcare needs of attendees.

The hospital’s medical teams will also be on hand at the MLB All-Star Game Charity 5K & Fun Run on July 8 at the Power & Light District. Other events where TUKH will provide healthcare assistance are the MLB All-Star Fantasy Camp and the MLB All-Star Game Jr. RBI Classic.
